Book Club

This was inspired by Sophia's comment in the discussion below. Book clubs are well established - the idea is commonplace, but what a fantastic chance to mix with people and talk about real things. Soph can you tell us some more?

Hiya,

Well, after a bit of a break we've reformed our book club, but we still need lots of ideas and input!!

Basically there are 6-10 of us who go out for a cheap meal every month or so and discuss a book. Very simple. The idea is that we all come with an idea/ question researched to contribute to the discussion.

The thing that is difficult is getting further than just discussing the book and bringing it back to us - how does it tie in with our thought processes, beliefs etc. A lot of us did Eng lit at uni and so we've been trained to look at it a bit more impersonally than I'd like.

I think some of the rest of you are in book clubs - it would be great to have ideas of what you're reading, how you do it.

I'm also heading down to the Grace Church Hackney book club sometime soon if anyone wants to come with me & get some ideas...

I also think that making discussing culture as a matter of course and being engaged/experimental means that when things like the Da Vinci code pop up people trust us to have a serious opinion and not just to be jumping on bandwagons.

Which is something I believe bookclubs can contribute too.

Maybe this is also a response to Steve's posting about Art for Art's sake.....

oooh look at the sentence structure there. And poor grammar. No-one will ever believe I could have a serious opinion on literature.

apologies.
